2011 – White ATM facades introduced and later echoed by competitors.

New signage system improved visibility and nighttime presence.

2015 – Phoenix branch concept, based on the Pioneer design, delivered major cost efficiencies. It enabled older branches to be refurbished, where the Pioneer concept had only been used for new builds.

2016 – Self-Service Terminal design improved efficiency and access.

2019 – Revised layout brought self-service to the front of branch flow.

Breaking barriers, building trustful spaces
Modular design solutions were the key to success, allowing scalability while maintaining Capitec’s signature simplicity and visual appeal identity.
Objective
- Future-proof branch designs to support Capitec’s continued growth.
- Create a scalable, flexible design system for branches, ensuring consistency across formats.
- Integrate digital touchpoints to enhance client experiences.
- Ensure cost-effective rollouts that maintain premium aesthetics and functionality.
Since 2010, Capitec’s branch designs have evolved from the traditional, barrier-heavy layouts to open, transparent spaces introduced with the "Pioneer Branch" concept by Allen International, embodying simplicity and empowerment. As digital banking grew and client expectations shifted, branches adapted to balance technology integration with personal interactions while accommodating retail and business banking needs.
This decade-long initiative revolutionised Capitec’s branch design by transforming static, transactional layouts into dynamic, client-centred spaces. A consistent, innovative approach was required to enhance trust, operational efficiency, and technology integration while maintaining scalability across 850+ branches.
Challenge
Balancing cost efficiency with impactful, scalable branch designs was challenging. Misaligned C-suite priorities, supplier dependencies, limited 3D tools, and no dedicated project manager disrupted progress across projects.
